President's Message
The ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI) is a non-profit, non-political society; IAFI is working for the last 20 years in India with the prime objective of active involvement of telecom sector in the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT). The society has been registered with the registrar of the societies with its secretariat working at New Delhi. ITU-APT Foundation of India has been recognized by the ITU as Regional Telecom Organization and IAFI is A Sector Member of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R), ITU Development Sector (ITU-D), ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU- T) and Affiliate Member of Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) which manifests its usefulness to the Indian Telecom industry. The Foundation members are entitled to participate and contribute to the activities of ITU-R, ITU-D, ITU-T and APT.
The scope of the society broadly relates to active involvement in the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations, and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity(APT), a multi-government regional organization on telecommunications including, inter-alia, broadcasting, information technology and space sciences, with special emphasis on rural development, to conduct and co-ordinate research studies on various technical, scientific, regulatory and other related matters, to make contributions to various conferences, meetings and other activities including technical study groups and associated events of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) within the framework of the established mechanism and to strengthen active co-operation with ITU and APT with special emphasis on rural development.
It is felt that the role of private sector and industry in these areas is minimal in our country. One of our thrust areas of activity would be to involve private sector and industry to the downstream and upstream activities of both ITU and APT. The Foundation would act as a bridge between industry and other institutions on the one hand and Government and Regulatory agencies on the other.
It would also encourage the industry and telecom intelligentsia to participate in the regulatory functions too. We propose to work in close co-operation with Department of Telecom
and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
ITU-APT Foundation has Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation with other ITU Associations mainly, ITU Association of Japan, ITU Concern Group, Indonesia, World Wireless Research Forum (WWRF) and Telecom Standards Development Society of India.
